8 ways to design a Feng Shui bedroom

Feng Shui is an ancient Chinese practice that aims to harmonise energy flow in a space to promote well-being and balance.

If any room needs to help us feel relaxed and well – it's our bedroom space.

The bedroom is where we spend significant time resting and rejuvenating – making bedroom Feng Shui a great idea to help create a positive energy flow and enhance sleep quality.

This article explores Feng Shui for bedrooms and some simple ways to start creating your own Feng Shui bedroom.

1. Clear clutter

Clutter is a major obstacle to good energy flow in your Feng Shui bedroom layout. Removing any unnecessary items will help create a more calming environment. Having extra storage in your bedroom can help reduce visual clutter. Look for pieces with drawers, compartments, and other storage. Some beds – like our Serenade Bed and Promenade Bed – offer hidden storage you can access via a gas-strut lift.

2. Bed placement

When designing a Feng Shui bedroom, it’s advised to position your bed in a "commanding position," which means having a clear view of the bedroom door without being directly in line with it. This Feng Shui bedroom layout symbolises being in control and feeling secure.

3. Colours and materials

One of the Feng Shui bedroom rules is to choose soothing colours, such as soft neutrals or pastels, to promote a calm and relaxing atmosphere. Nature-inspired tones like rich earth tones, soft blues, and greens also help create a tranquil space. Opting for natural materials, like wood, cotton, linen and wool brings earthy energy to your bedroom Feng Shui.

4. Balance Yin and Yang

Incorporate a balance of Yin (passive) and Yang (active) energy in your bedroom feng shui. Balance can be achieved by including both soft, gentle elements (Yin) – like soft upholstery and plush bedding – and more vibrant, energetic elements (Yang) – like a contrasting accent wall or artwork. The idea is that these opposing forces work together to create a cohesive flow that helps build your feng shui bedroom.

5. Balanced lighting

Using a combination of natural and artificial light can help create a harmonious balance in the bedroom feng shui. By adding floor lamps and table lamps you can introduce more yang energy and won’t need to reply on bright overhead lighting. You may need to add more than one lamp to ensure the lighting is balanced. The number one bedroom Feng Shui rule for lighting is to always avoid harsh or overly bright lights. Choosing lighting with dimming functionality can be a great option.

6. Mirror placement

Be mindful of the placement of mirrors in your bedroom Feng Shui layout. Avoid positioning mirrors to directly face your bed, as they can reflect and amplify energy, which can lead to restlessness or feelings of anxiety.

7. Plants and nature

Introducing plants into your bedroom helps bring vibrant and refreshing energy to your bedroom Feng Shui design. Plants strengthen the energy of one of the five Feng Shui elements – wood – and bring a natural colour palette and add increased oxygen into the room. One or two plants are all you need; however, you can also add artwork with plant and nature themes if you prefer this to living plants.

8. Personal touches

Always add personal items and decor that bring you joy and reflect your personality. While this isn’t specific to Feng Shui bedroom design – surrounding yourself with meaningful things does create a positive energy in your space. To keep within bedroom Feng Shui rules, consider the colour palette, elements, materials, and placement of the personal items you choose.
